He paid for college educations for some of them and built a church and a women's clinic in Cambodia. When he was manager of the FMC plant and warehouse in Fresno, he was well known as one of the top goodwill ambassadors for the city. He never ran from tough situations with employees and was always ready to lend a helping hand, always willing to solve problems. He and his first wife, Helen, mother of their five sons, frequently entertained visitors and friends on short notice. He sponsored exchange students and remained in contact with them and with people he had stayed with in Belgium during the war.
