Wilkes Thomas Martin Jr.

It is with great sadness and heavy heart that we announce the passing of Major Wilkes Thomas Martin Jr., on December 16, 2023, a loving father, grandfather, proud and devoted army veteran. He lived a life filled with honor and duty to his country.
Wilkes (Tom) was born on February 27th 1942 in Inman, SC, where he was raised by his loving parents. His father, Wilkes Thomas Martin Sr., a Chief of Police, and mother, Frances Turpin Martin, a school teacher. From a young age, he displayed a strong interest in education and a desire to learn a variety of disciplines from mechanical to rocket sciences, These qualities would become the hallmarks of his life and would be the foundation of his career.
After graduating from Clemson University, Wilkes spent 20+ years as an officer in the service of the United States Army. He was deployed overseas to Vietnam, Korea, and Germany. He served his country with honor and distinction, earning two Bronze Stars, National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and the Meritorious Service Medal.
Major Martin had two children, Marian Martin Hancock and Wilkes Thomas Martin Ill (Trey). As a father, Major Martin instilled in his children a strong sense of responsibility and love of country.
Major Martin had a passion for guns, engines, and history. He was a skilled marksman and enjoyed spending time at the shooting range. He was often called upon by his friends to help with their engines and guns and he never hesitated to lend a hand. Wilkes was a beloved member of his Huntsville, AL and Inman, SC communities and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his loving sister, Frankie Martin Bush, his children Marian Martin Hancock and Wilkes Thomas Martin III, and his three grandchildren Lacy Hancock, Wilkes Martin, IV, and Garet Martin.
We extend our sincerest sympathies to his family during this difficult time and offer them comfort in the knowledge that Major Martin will be at peace.
