Walter William Mathis, 94, of 571 Cothran Creek Road, Inman, SC, passed away Thursday, March 10, 2016 at National Healthcare in Laurens, SC. Walter was born in Gramling, SC on September 2, 1921, a son of the late John Thomas and Bessie (Greene) Mathis. He was the husband of Edith (Settle) Mathis and was first married to the late Ruth O'Shields Mathis . He was retired from Inman Mills and was formerly an agent with Liberty Life Insurance Company. He was a member of Holston Creek Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Navy in WW II. In addition to his wife he is survived by two grandsons, Scott Cothran and his wife Beverly and Mark Cothran and his wife Kelly, two great grandchildren, Tyler and Abigail Cothran. He was predeceased by a daughter, Donna Cothran. The family is at the home of his grandson at 316 Laura Faye Lane, Lyman and will receive friends Saturday, March 12, 2016 from 1:00 - 2:00 PM at Holston Creek Baptist Church. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 PM in the church with Dr. Reggie Parker officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Caris Healthcare, 446 East Cambridge Ave., Greenwood, SC 29646.
