Russell Harry Simmons of Spartanburg passed away Thursday, January 2, 2014 at his home.
Russell was born in Spartanburg, a son of the late Floree Brady Simmons and L.P. Simmons.
He was the widower of Ruby McGarity Simmons. He is the last survivor of his immediate family.
He served in the U.S. Army as a SSG in the Korean War. He served stateside in the 3rd Army, with the 7th Army (anti aircraft) in Europe, and the 24th Infantry Division (tank battalion) and 1st Calvary Division in Korea. He received 2 good conduct medals, European Occupation Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Far East Defense Medal, and numerous other citations. He also served in the Honor Guard during his active duty tenure. He was a member of Spartanburg Chapter 3 D.A.V., American Legion Post 45, V.F.W. Post 9539; 3rd Vice Chairman of American Legion, Sergeant at Arms at American Legion Post 45, Past Commander of the 4th District D.A.V., Past Commander of D.A.V. Chapter 3, and Sergeant at Arms for the 5th District American Legion. Russell became disabled during his enlistment in the U.S. Army defending our freedom.
Graveside services with military honors will be held at Ft. Prince Memorial Gardens Sunday, January 5, 2014 at 2:00 PM conducted by Rev. Ronald Smalley.
