Robert Owen White, Jr.

Robert Owen White Jr., 85, born in Evanston, Illinois, passed away peacefully at his home in Inman, South Carolina, on June 16, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Born on January 13, 1941, Bob lived a life defined by service, strength, and unwavering devotion to his family, friends, and country.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Cynthia White; his daughter, Atchariya Balzano and her husband, Mike; and his stepson, Andrew White, whom he loved and cherished as a son, and Andrew’s wife, Carrie. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Emily Guy and her husband, Timmy; Carson White and his wife, Maddy; Tiffany Balzano; and Danny Balzano, along with many extended family members and friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

He was preceded in death by his stepson, David White, who held a special place in his heart as a son; his brother, Harry White; his mother, Josephine Donnelson; and his father, Robert White.

A proud veteran, Bob served six years in the United States Navy before earning his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University and his master’s degree from the University of Southern California. Believing deeply in hard work, self-reliance, and lifelong learning, he continued to build upon the foundation he had created through determination and perseverance. He later served an additional four years in the U.S. Navy to fulfill his commitment through what is now known as the GI Bill. His military service included time as a Navy UDT (Underwater Demolition Team) member, reflecting both his courage and dedication to the United States.

Bob went on to a distinguished and highly respected 27-year career with Air America and the CIA, serving as Station Chief in several countries throughout his career. He retired in 1993 as a GS-17. He was also a proud member of China Post 1, the only American Legion Post living in exile. Known for his discipline, resilience, and quiet leadership, Bob carried himself with the confidence of a man who had earned every step of his journey.

Family was at the center of Bob’s world. He was the kind of man who showed up when it mattered most, without hesitation. If someone needed help, Bob was there. He made sure people were taken care of, even if he grumbled a little while doing it, a trait that only made those moments more endearing to the people who knew him best. He took deep pride in the life he built and the family he provided for, never forgetting that he had started much of it on his own.

From an early age, Bob was determined and self-reliant. He proudly made his way into the Navy on his own, driven by grit, ambition, and a desire to serve. Those same qualities guided him throughout his life and career.

Those who knew Bob will remember his quiet, observant nature. He was always watching, always taking things in, often reminding his children that “the eagle’s watching.” While he generally preferred to stay in the background, he absolutely drew the line at group chats, a family joke that never failed to get a reaction out of him.

But when Bob spoke, everything changed. His stories came alive, often unexpectedly, filled with humor, detail, and the wisdom of a life fully lived. In those moments, his quiet exterior gave way to something unforgettable: a storyteller shaped by decades of service, adventure, and experience.

Bob was a man who took pride in his accomplishments but never lost sight of his responsibility to others. Whether through his service to his country, his devotion to his family, or the friendships he built along the way, he left behind a legacy of strength, loyalty, and love.

In accordance with his wishes, Bob will be cremated, and a Celebration of Life will be held at Seawright Funeral Home in Inman, SC on Saturday June 27, 2026 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Mitch Crow officiating.  Military Honors will be provided by Boiling Springs Post 200.

Though he will be deeply missed, Bob’s legacy of service, sacrifice, and devotion will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
