Inman
Mr. Paul Edward High, 87, of 34 Gosnell Ave, Inman answered his final muster on Friday, January 4th, 2008 at his residence. Paul was born at 16 F Street, Inman, on November 22, 1920. He was the son of the late Ed and Cora Johnson High who were from Inman. He was the loving husband of Faye Peeler High for 60 years. Paul was predeceased by two sisters, Mabel Blackwell and Lola Mae Mason. Paul retired from the Inman Post Office in 1976 with over 33 years of service as a letter carrier. He also worked as a housepainter, security guard at Deering Milliken, and a salesman at Inman Seed and Supply. He was a member of Inman Presbyterian Church since 1932. In those early years, he was responsible for firing up the potbelly stoves on Sunday mornings. He also served as a former deacon and elder at the church.
He served in the U.S. Army during WW II having served from 1942 until 1945 with the 36th Infantry Regiment and 83rd Recon Battalion of the 3rd Armored Division in the European Theatre as a Headquarters Sergeant. Paul was twice wounded in action, in Germany on Nov. 5, 1944 and in Belgium on Jan. 4, 1945 during the Battle of the Bulge. He received two Purple Hearts, European Theater Campaign Medal, Eamet Campaign Medal with 4 bronze service stars, Good Conduct medal, Victory medal, Purple Heart cluster and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Paul was an active member of American Legion Post #45 for more than 60 years where he was the membership chairman and for 50 years the publicity chairman. As such he wrote the Post 45 news column in the Inman Times for 50 years. During these American Legion years, he worked with the American Legion Post 45 baseball program for all of it's existence. In 1981, Paul was named the Outstanding Legionnaire of South Carolina. In 2003, he received an award from the Department of SC Public Relations. Recently Paul received a certificate from the National Headquarters of the American Legion recognizing his 60 years of continuous service.. As an active member of the Aldersgate Methodist Church's Men's Club, Paul was named Man of the Year in 2003. He was a former Scoutmaster of Inman Boy Scout Troop 27.
Paul will be missed by his wife, family, friends, American Legion Post 45, and the town of Inman. He was a faithful christian and a friend to all who knew him. The family will be at his home and will receive friends 10-11:OOam Monday at Inman Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 Monday at Inman Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Gordon Raynal and Rev. Donnan Lawson. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens with military rites performed by Rutherford County Honor Guard. American Legion Post 45 and auxiliary will serve as honorary escorts.
