It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Norma Jean Mitchell West, 82, of Spartanburg, who went to be with Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Monday, June 24, 2024. Norma was born in Spartanburg, SC on November 20, 1941, the daughter of the late Azalee and R.C. Silvey. She is not only predeceased by her parents; but her husband, John Q. West, Jr., her brother, Michael Silvey, a second brother, David Silvey and a nephew, Travis Silvey.
Norma was a wonderful, loving and Godly woman. She loved so easily and was loved by everyone that came into her life.
Through ups and downs she always held steadfast in her belief that there was a purpose in God allowing our human bodies to go through trials and tribulations and saw them as an opportunity to grow stronger in our faith in Him. She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church. Survivors include: a son, Tim West of Inman, a daughter, Tonya West Morris (Nick) of Spartanburg, a granddaughter, Erin Shields (Jake) of Inman, a second granddaughter, Morgan West of Inman, a great grandson, Charles Shields of Inman and a nephew, Dustin Silvey (Dawn) of Pauline. Our Mother also leaves behind her dearest and lifelong best friend, Betty Foster of North Augusta, SC.
Aside from a mother's pride for the accomplishments of her own two children, were the accomplishments and life goals of her two intelligent and beautiful granddaughters, Erin & Morgan. Norma's granddaughters filled her heart with such delight! But there was an extra special place in her heart for her great-grandson Charles. She was always excited to hear any and everything about Charles and cherished every moment she got to see him. She was most grateful to God every day for allowing her the opportunity to be a part of their lives and see them grow.
The family would like to thank the staff at PRWC for their care and treatment of our mother during her stay there. Norma loved to socialize with her new friends there and participate in all the activities, celebrations, and church services. She would have had to be bedridden to keep her away from all the fun! We would also like to thank the generous and caring second floor staff at Spartanburg Regional Restorative Care. They took extra special care of her and couldn’t help but fall in love with our mother. Her gentleness and easy-going spirit made each of their jobs more pleasurable. She will now and forever rest in peace... but the selfishness of our hearts will continue to love and miss her every day.
The family will receive friends on Monday, July 8, 2024, between 5 PM and 7 PM at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 842 Mount Zion Rd, Spartanburg, SC 29303. The family will conduct a memorial service at 7PM at the church, with Rev. Monty King officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Mount Zion Baptist Church, 842 Mount Zion Road, Spartanburg, South Carolina 29303.
Private family burial to be held at Fort Prince Cemetery.
