Nettie Lee Ligon, 88, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, passed away Sunday, December 2, 2018, at Greenvillle Memorial Hospital. Nettie was born in Spartanburg County , on January 6, 1930, a daughter of the late Jesse Harland York and Esther Barber York.
She was the widow of Thomas Newton Ligon. Mrs. Ligon worked as a House Parent at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind for over 30 years, before retiring. She was a devoted caretaker of the museum at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind. She served as secretary for the Palmetto Club for Deaf, was a member of the South Carolina Alumni for Deaf and as an editor of the South Carolina News- Publication for Deaf. Mrs. Ligon was a member of First Baptist Church of Spartanburg's Deaf Ministry and a former member of Cedar Springs Baptist Church.
Nettie is survived by a daughter, Teresa J. Ligon, of North Carolina; three sons, Johnny H. Ligon, of Waterloo, South Carolina; Danny R. Ligon and his wife, Jana, of Spartanburg, South Carolina; Ronny L. Ligon, of Spartanburg, South Carolina; a sister, Betty Bennett, of Jacksonville, Florida. Nettie is also survived by eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Ligon was predeceased by a son, Jerry Wayne Ligon; a brother, Rudy York and three sisters, Sarah Videtto, Viva Kotell and Margaret Brooks.
Visitation will be held, Thursday, December 6, 2018, from 1:30 PM until 2:45 PM at the Davis Chapel, First Baptist Church of Spartanburg. Funeral Services will follow at 3:00 PM on Thursday, December 6, 2018, in the Davis Chapel, First Baptist of Spartanburg, conducted by, Rev. Sam Davis, Rev. Sal Barone and Mr. Calvin Holst. Interment will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Spartanburg, South Carolina.
The families are at their respective homes. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the South Carolina School for the Deaf Alumni Association, PO Box 6523, Spartanburg, South Carolina 29304.
