Mr. Miller Clyde Foster, Jr., 84, of 3621 Stone Station Rd. died Wednesday, June 25th, 2008 at Inman Healthcare.
Mr. Foster was born in Spartanburg, SC on October 10, 1923, the son of the late Miller C. and Lucie (Wingo) Foster. He was the widower of Ethel "Jo" Love Sideman Foster. Mr. Foster was survived by a son, Miller Clyde Foster III and his wife Gail of Spartanburg, a sister, Lucie Adams of Tucson, Arizona, two grandchildren, Brandi Rhodes and Clay Rhodes, and three great grandchildren, Alexus Rhodes, Makalah Rhodes, and David Rhodes.
He was educated in the Pine Street School of Spartanburg and Woodrow Wilson High School of Washington, DC. In 1942, after two years at The Citadel, he enlisted into World War II service. He was deployed to the European Theater of Operations as a 44th Infantry Division advance aid station medical technician; his Division was engaged in active combat in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, Central Europe, and Ardennes-Alsace. He was awarded the Bronze Star with two oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart. Subsequently, he was graduated from the University of South Carolina with Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees. He was engaged in management training with Coca-Cola; taught physics, chemistry and biology at Duncan High School; and in 1954 became Clerk of Court of the United States District Court for the Western District of South Carolina. In 1965 the state's Eastern and Western Districts were
consolidated into the single District of South Carolina headquartered in Columbia, SC. He served as Clerk of Court for this federal court unit until his retirement in 1981. Under his leadership, South Carolina was the first federal court in the nation to automate its jury system, and it became the criterion for the federal court system.
An Eagle Scout himself, he served for many years as chairman of the Troop Committee of Spartanburg Boy Scout Troop 3 and also on the Executive Board of the Palmetto Council. He was an Elder of Nazareth Presbyterian Church and longtime chairman of the Trustees of Nazareth Cemetery. He was a member of the
Downtown Rotary Club, a former board member of Friends of the Library, and former Commander of American Legion Post 28. He was a lifelong Democrat.
A memorial graveside service will be held Saturday, June 28, 2008 at 9:30am at Nazareth Presbyterian Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. David Sutton. Visitation will follow the service.
