Michael Cornelius Hayes

Michael Cornelius Hayes passed away on October 3rd, 2024, at the age of 76 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Born on January 21,1948 to parents Robert C. Hayes and Josephine L. Hayes. Michael lived a life marked by his passion for athletics, reading and writing, and his compassion for helping others.

Michael's youth was spent mastering water skiing on DeRuyter Lake and excelling in gymnastics, particularly on the high bar and rings. His love for sports was not confined to the warmer months, as he also enjoyed downhill skiing during the winter. As an adult, Michael passed on his love for skiing and golf to his children, teaching them both sports with great enthusiasm.

Michael proudly served in the Air Force in the Vietnam War, where he brought the same dedication and excellence as he did in every other aspect of his life. After the war he attended Syracuse University on the G.I. Bill and graduated with a degree in political science.

Michael enjoyed riding his bicycle and walking on the beach. He had a profound love for reading and writing. He loved sharing poems and stories with his writer’s group and authored the book “Trying Hypocrisy.” Michael volunteered 6 days a week at his local soup kitchen, cooking and serving meals, and offering support and companionship to those less fortunate.

Michael is survived by his daughter, Sara Hayes; son, Marc Hayes; grandchildren, Luci and Bennie Hayes; brothers, Andy, Bobby, Peter Hayes and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Chris Hayes.

In honor of Michael, please take a moment to offer generosity and compassion to someone in need.
