Melvin Julian Covil

Melvin Julian Covil, 86, of Spartanburg, SC passed away, peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday December 2nd, 2023.
Born in Tryon, NC on June 25, 1937, he was the son of Edgar Grady and Carrie Chapman Covil.
Melvin was a United States Air Force veteran; he was proud to have served his country for six years. He was CEO of The Westgate Executive Center. He was the Managing Trustee of Group 4., The President and Co-Owner of Westgate Real Estate, Inc., President of Westgate Construction Company, Inc. He was a licensed Residential Builder with the South Carolina Home Builders Commission, President of the Spartanburg Home Builders Association in 1982, won the Outstanding Home Builder Service Award in 1982, 1987, and 1992. He served as Chairman of Zoning Board of Appeals in 2002-2003, and Vice Chairman 1995-2002.
Melvin served as Board of Directors for numerous local banks in the Spartanburg area.
Melvin was a graduate of the University of South Carolina, College of Business Relators Institute as well as the Century 21 International Brokerage Management Academy. He was licensed in 1967 as a North and South Carolina Real Estate Broker. He was a Certified Residential Specialist (CRS), Certified Residential Brokerage Manager (CRB), and a Graduate of the Relator Institute (CRI). He was President of the Spartanburg Board of Realtors in 1990, Realtor of the Year in 1994, and was recognized for 35 continuous years of service in 2002 from the Spartanburg Board of Realtors.
Melvin is survived by his wife of 59 years, Myra Reid Covil. He is also survived by his only child, Julie Covil Burnett (Chip), one grandson, Allston Reid Burnett, and one granddaughter, Anna Burnett Wilson (Thomas). All of Spartanburg.
He is also survived by his only brother, Jerry Covil, and niece Chris Covil Sumner; both of Inman.
A private family service will be held at Gramling Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family would like to express sincere gratitude to the nurses and doctors of Spartanburg Medical Center – Mary Black Campus, Intensive Care Unit.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gramling Methodist Church, or a charity of your choosing.
