March 22, 1910 — January 12, 2010

Inman, SC

On Tuesday, January 12, 2010, God called home His angel, Mary Bowling Burns. Beloved mother, grandmother and aunt. Mary was born on Tuesday, March 22, 1910, to Benjamin and Cora Edwards Bowling in Landrum, South Carolina. Mary outlived in years all six brothers and sisters who went on before her: Lois, Ruth, Grace, Thomas, Ralph and Herbert. Mary graduated from the Asheville Teacher's College in 1931 and later earned her Master's Degree in education. She taught elementary school in various schools in Spartanburg County for 38 years and retired from Inman Elementary School.

In April 1936, she married Hollis Burns and they were married 57 years before his death in 1993. They are survived by one daughter, Aurelia Roper (Brock), grandson Chuck Robbins (Pat) and great-grandchildren Kyle Robbins, Suzanne Bird and Thomas Bird. She also leaves behind many loved and cherished nieces and nephews.

Mary's greatest love in her life was her family. She was raised in a loving, Christian family and she enjoyed telling the many stories of happy days spent on the family farm. Her love and care of family never waivered and she never hesitated to tell anyone how important love was within a family. She also loved her Lord and church, Inman United Methodist, where she was a faithful member and its oldest living member until her death.
