Martha Annette Bartsch

Martha Annette Bartsch, 75, of Spartanburg died August 19, 2024 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born January 5, 1949 in Inman, SC to her loving parents, Nettie and Horace Johnson.

She is predeceased by her husband of over forty-four years, Peter Uwe Horst Bartsch and her siblings: Mary Lois Tucker, Robert Johnson, Ralph Johnson, Kathleen Shields, Dorothy Hunnicutt, and J. Harold Johnson. She is survived by her three children, LTC Karl Uwe Bartsch (April Brice Bartsch) of Spartanburg, Natascha Leigh Brown (Toby Scott Brown) of Roebuck, and Joseph Sean Bartsch (Tina Milligan Bartsch) of Spartanburg and her eight beloved grandchildren: Aidan Brown, Arte Brown, Anna Kate Bartsch, Page Wagner, Brayden Bartsch, Amara Wagner, Logan Bartsch, and Millie Bartsch. Martha is also survived by her brother Ray Johnson of Inman, her brother Donny Johnson of Inman, and her sister Thelma Jolley of Inman.

Martha was a loving nurturer. As the youngest of ten children, she has been a caregiver her entire life. As a young woman, Martha took care of her aging parents. After having children of her own, she became an amazing mother who doted on her children and made sure they were at every band practice, scouting event, soccer practice, Karate practice, piano lesson, and everywhere in between. When her husband Peter was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, she became his loving caregiver for almost twenty years. She has left a crater-sized hole in the lives of her family and friends. Martha was a graduate of Kenneth Shuler School of Cosmetology and worked until the birth of her first son, Karl. She was a stay at home mom until her last child, Sean, went to kindergarten. She then worked at various schools in Spartanburg School District 3 in the cafeteria to follow her children as they went through the school system. After her retirement from District 3, she worked for her husband’s company as an office manager, secretary. Martha cared for many grandchildren throughout the years. She taught them to bake, make German recipes, and completed fun art projects with them. She enjoyed pulling them in wagons and riding them around in the bike stroller. Martha was a woman of strong, unshakeable faith. She attended Rock Hill Baptist church, Morningside Baptist Church, Buck Creek Baptist Church and online church faithfully as God moved her to different places. She taught her grandchildren about God and sang many beloved songs with them and taught them lessons that they will never forget. Some of her last words were about her Jesus and how He would never forsake her. Martha loved music and supporting her family. She went to countless concerts, ball games, and band competitions to see her family perform and play. Martha spent her last years feeding “her” deer, visiting her beloved husband at his grave, loving on her grandbabies, visiting with her family, and petting her granddogs. She called her family often, and persistently. Martha was wife, Mom, Oma, sister, aunt, cousin, caregiver and friend to so many.
