Lewis Matthew Brown, Sr. of Inman, SC died Saturday, August 11, 2012 in his home.
Born in Lyman, SC, Lewis was the son of Fred Beattie and Ethel Hunt Brown. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Elsie Carol Glenn Brown, and children Judith Brown Vickery (Larry), Lewis Matthew Brown Jr. (Barbara), Jane Hunt Brown (and special friend Amy Woods); 2 granddaughters Megan McLeod Brown Holliday (Nick), Leah McMakin Brown (fiancé Enrico Gatti); great granddaughter Lila McLeod Holliday. Additional survivors include a sister, Betty Brown Freeman; nieces Jeannie Freeman Janik (Johnny), Anna Curran Lane (Hank); and nephew Tim Freeman (Susan) plus several great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother Fred B. Brown, Jr.
Lewis was employed for over 32 years by Nationwide Insurance Company. Prior to retirement, he worked in the Legal and Claims Divisions where he served for 20 years in the Raleigh, NC and Columbia, SC offices. Mr. Brown was a former associate of Dugan, Reese and McKinney Law Firm. He served in the Air Force in WW Il in China, Burma and India and was a graduate of Wofford College (1949). Mr. Brown was a member of the SC Bar Association and a charter member of Greer Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was also a former member of the Board of Trustees of Inman United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 12:30 - 1:00 pm on Monday, August 13 at Inman United Methodist Church with a funeral service to follow at 1:00 pm. Interment will be private. The family would like to give a special thanks to all of the caregivers from Comfort Keepers, Vista Care Hospice and to the many other loving individuals who have been involved in his care.
