Born May 31, 1923, in Valley Falls, S.C., he was the son of the late Otto and Gerry Horton Marlow.
A graduate of Gramling High School, he attended Clemson University and remained a life-long Tiger fan. He was a very active and long-time member of The Lion's Club. He grew the best peaches in Spartanburg County and ran Windy Hill Grocery before working for the Spartanburg County Tax Office. After 20-plus years of service, he retired as Spartanburg County's Tax Assessor in 1988. So well-known and liked was he, The Beacon (where he took Juanita on their first date) named a sandwich after him, the Assessor's Special. Upon retiring he returned to his garden, growing watermelon, 'maters, beans and much more. He always enjoyed taking his grandchildren fishing at the pond near the house.
Left to cherish his memories are his children, Suzanne Hardeman (Mike), Carolyn Richardson, Otto Marlow (Kathy), Jeannie Schlessman (David), James Marlow (Kim); brothers, Glenn Marlow (Mary), William L. Marlow (Evanell); sister, Alice Blackwell (Bennie); grandchildren, Scott Cogdill, Joan Pavao, Michele Hardeman, Susan Williams, Chip Hardeman, Joshua and Josiah Schlessman, April Ravelli, Otto "Bud" Marlow, Caleb Marlow; he took much delight in his great-grandchildren, Chloe, Gabriel and Liam Williams and Ella Pavao. He was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Tom and Vendetta Nicholson and son-in-law, Ronald Richardson.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Robert Britanisky, Rosecrest Retirement Center staff, the doctors and staff at Spartanburg Regional and Hospice House for their loving care of Daddy.
Memorials may be made to Mobile Meals of Spartanburg.
