Johnny Glover Wofford

March 16, 1931 — May 29, 2017

Spartanburg, SC

Johnny Glover Wofford, Sr., age 86, passed away on Monday, May 29, 2017, at his home. Johnny was born on March 16, 1931 to Harvey and Grace (Glover) Wofford. Johnny served in the army from 1953 to 1955. He was assigned to Germany in the 7th Army attached to the 101st Air Born Division during the Korean War. He attended Wofford College and the University of South Carolina following his military service and had a successful career as an industrial engineer. There was no problem that Johnny could not fix and no process that he could not make more efficient. Johnny was a devoted and loving husband to his wife of 63 years, Katie Smith Wofford. He was a hero to his children, son John G. Wofford, Jr. and daughter Christy Wofford Mahaffey. He loved his son-in-law, Kevin W. Mahaffey, and his daughter-in-law, Penny C. Wofford, as if they were his own. He found the upmost joy and pride in being a grandfather to his two grandsons and best "buddies" Matthew and Joshua Mahaffey. He is survived by his older brother, Harvey F. Wofford, Jr., age 93, but when together, they still acted like spry young men. Johnny was a role model. He shared his wisdom and conveyed valuable life lessons but he did not do so by taking himself too seriously. He made his family, friends and all who knew him laugh endlessly with his corny jokes and witty sense of humor. He was most admired for his work ethic and generosity. He did not hesitate to give what he had to anyone in need without any expectation of return. Johnny was one of the best. He will be greatly missed but not forgotten. His love and great influence will continue on in the hearts of his family and friends. A memorial graveside service in his honor will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 2, 2017 at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with Rev. Dave Nichols, Rev. Tod Alexander and Mr. Kevin Mahaffey officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, Spartanburg, South Carolina or to the Alzheimer's Association, 901 Pine Street, Spartanburg, South Carolina.
