Spartanburg, SC---Johnny Lain Halford, 82, of Spartanburg passed away Friday, October 11, 2013 at Valley Falls Terrace in Spartanburg. Born in Pacolet, SC on October 15, 1930, he was the son of the late Mr. Robert David and Mrs. Cora Lee (Edwards) Halford and was the husband of the late Mrs. Mary Louise (Carines) Halford. Johnny was a retired NASCAR Winston Cup Series driver who raced from 1969 - 1978. Johnny was refered to as "High Pockets" because of his 6'- 6" height. He won the 1976 ARCA 200 at Talladega in the #82 Dodge. He was also a paint contractor. He is survived by three children, Mary Ann Bell of Cowpens, SC, David Leroy Halford, Sr of Spartanburg and Steve Halford of Spartanburg, SC; eight grandchildren, Sam "Wino" Hammett, Tim Ray Hammett, David Leroy Halford, Jr., Jamie Whiteside, Katherine Meece, Teresa Meece, Cheyenne Halford and Julie Halford and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by one daughter, Patricia "Missy" Ann Halford and one brother, Robert Blain Halford.
Visitation for Mr. Halford will be held on Sunday, October 13, 2013 from 1:30 - 2:30 PM at Seawright Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held in the Seawright Funeral Chapel at 2:30 PM with Arthur Fletcher officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg.
