Bert Reash

John Bert Reash 91, of 1130 Wilkins Road died January 3, 2012 at his home. Bert was one of the original crew members of the B-17 Flying Fortress "Nine 0 Nine", and was one of the first bombing missions that occurred over Berlin. As a flight engineer he was a top turrent gunner having flown 35 missions during WWII. Reash served in the Army Corp from 1942 to 1945 and received the distinguished Flying Cross medal and 12 air medals. He was also given the title of Senior Master Sergeant. After the service he became a metal spinner and plant manager in Akron, Ohio. He was also a highway patrolman and a police captain for the Department of Defense. He moved to South Carolina in the 1980's and became a golf instructor and avid sportsman. He loved to fish and spend time with his Rosey and Kitty.
Bert was predeceased by his brother and wife Mary Joe. He was a mentor and friend to the many people he knew. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and was a member of the 32nd degree Masons. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 2:00PM at the Seawright Funeral Chapel with Chaplain Rick Millwood officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Red Cross of the Upstate, 940 Grove Road, PO Box 9035, Greenville, SC 29604.
