John Lansford Moss

John Lansford Moss, age 72, went home to be with his Savior on October 29, 2024, after a courageous fight against cancer. Born on January 18, 1952, at the Crow Clinic in Cowpens, SC, John was the son of the late William Dever and Mary Ann Ellis Moss. John was of the Baptist faith and most recently attended Green Point Baptist Church in Boiling Springs.

John was an avid historian whose passion especially for Colonial Period and Revolutionary War reenacting was well known and appreciated by many. Captain John was one of the founding members of the South Carolina Independent Rangers and participated in historical living history events all around South and North Carolina including his two most favored sites, Cowpens National Battlefield and Walnut Grove Plantation in Spartanburg County. If there was an historical event going on, you can bet Captain John was there! His final wish was for his ashes to be scattered at the battlefield.

John worked for 25+ years at Community Cash – Pinewood and most recently retired from Spartanburg County School District 6 where he worked at the Dorman High School Freshman Campus.

John is survived by a brother, David Moss, and his wife, Pat, of Cooley Springs, and by a sister, Annette Partridge, and her husband, Larry, of Holly Springs, along with nieces and nephews: Charlotte Lawson, David Moss, Jr., (Ashley); Cheyenne Lawson (Andy), and Jeremy Moss (Jordan), as well as great-niece and -nephews: Sarietta, Liam, and Ezra. There were also many other children (many now grown) far and wide who called him “Uncle John.”

A memorial service for John will be held at Cowpens National Battlefield on Friday, January 17, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. with Revs. Carroll Caldwell and Bruce Jennings officiating. Reenactors are encouraged to “dress out.”
