John Douglas Garland, 57, of Campobello passed away Saturday, December 6th, from complications from C.O.P.D.
Born in Detroit, Michigan on January 3, 1957, he was a son of the late Martha Carver Garland who had lived in Maggie Valley, NC and Arville Douglas Garland who had lived in Erwin, TN. John graduated from Chadsey High in Detroit, Michigan in 1973,earned the Order of the Eagle from his scout troop in Detroit in 1973, joined the U.S. Navy in December of 1975, joined the Unicoi County Sheriff's Department serving 1979-1981, he graduated ETSU with a bachelor degree in 1982, opened and operated the Maggie Valley Hoagie Shop in Maggie Valley, N.C. 1980-1993. In 1983 he opened Rosedale Community Care Home which continues to be operated by his wife and worked for Maximum Express, a contractor for the U.S. Postal Service since 1996.
He was the husband of Michelle Ann Denis Garland of 38 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Christina Garland of Wilmington, NC, April Garland Ledbetter Coffey and her husband Mike of Inman; sons, Jonathan Douglas Garland of Campobello, Joseph Allen Garland of Boiling Springs; a grandchildren Jaclyn Marie Martha Garland of the home; grandsons, Mitchell Garland of Wilmington, NC, Jason and Chase Ledbetter of Inman; a sister, Connie Garland of Maggie valley, N.C.; a brother, Roy Scott Garland of Wyoming; nieces, Pauline Collinson, Dawn Blankenbach, Allison Soria, and many others; nephews, Cody and Colton Garland, Danny Blankenbach, Ken Collinson, Michael Blackenbach, Dylan Soria, and many others. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. A celebration of his life will be held Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at 6:00pm at Seawright Funeral Chapel in Inman conducted by Rev. Terry Fleming. The family is at his home and will receive friends Tuesday from 5:00 pm until 6:00 PM prior to the service at Seawright Funeral Home. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery Waynesville, N.C. on Wednesday, December 10, 2014.
