John Ervin Clayton, Sr., 85, passed away Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his family. John was born in Campobello, South Carolina, on July 28, 1932, a son of the late William Gowan Clayton and Laura Jeanette King Clayton. He was the husband of Karen Huffman Clayton. Mr. Clayton was a United States Air Force veteran, serving during the Korean War as part of the 10th Bomber Wing. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 287 and a member of Masonic Lodge 143. John got an early start in the computer industry, working in the 1950's as a computer programmer, and continued in this field with Honeywell Inc. as a computer systems analyst and in sales and marketing. He later worked in the neoprene industry, opening his own company, CEI Manufacturing in 1990.
Mr. Clayton was an avid golfer and was a former Little League Baseball coach with the Charlotte Youth Athletic Club. He was a man of strong faith and was a member of the Shepherd's Chapel. He was well known in his family as being extremely tech-savvy, easily keeping up with the younger generation and even mastered the use of emojis and texting. His interests were quite varied, ranging from current politics, alternative healthcare to organic farming and he enjoyed engaging in spirited debate. He was very close with his family, who are deeply saddened by his passing.
Along with his wife, John is survived by three daughters, Gina L. Clayton and her husband, Ali Ghomshe , of Palm Harbor, Florida; April E. Johnston and her husband, Mark , of Kailua Kona, Hawaii; Sarah J. Clayton, of Campobello, South Carolina; two sons, Scott Clayton and his wife, Deborah, of Vale, North Carolina; John Ervin Clayton II and his wife, Tracy of Inman, South Carolina; two brothers, Harley Clayton of Inman, South Carolina; Marvin Clayton and his wife, Audrey of Westbrook, Minnesota; a sister, Joyce Farmer and her husband, David of Inman, South Carolina; three grandchildren, Kelley Clayton of Charlotte, North Carolina; Emily Ghomshe of Daegu, South Korea; Madelin Ghomshe of Palm Harbor, Florida, and great-granddaughter, Maya Zayas of Charlotte, North Carolina.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Clayton was predeceased by his siblings, William Clayton, Jr., Annie Clayton, Pearl Payne and Willie Mae (Bill) Clayton.
A memorial service will be held at Seawright Funeral Chapel, at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 7, 2017, conducted by Rev. Kenneth Cash.
