John Langdon Christy
Inman, South Carolina—
John Langdon Christy, 73, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 14, 2015. He was at his home surrounded by family and friends. He was born to the late Delores Logan and Langdon Alberto Christy on June 5, 1941 in Hendersonville, NC. He graduated from Mills River High School in Hendersonville in 1959, Mars Hill College in 1962 and earned his degree in Civil Engineering from Clemson University in 1965. After graduating from college, he was employed at Fiske-Carter for over 20 years. John retired from Roebuck Buildings after more than 20 years of service. John loved the Lord and his church, Holston Creek Baptist Church in Inman. He actively served as a Sunday School teacher, on the Building and Grounds Committee, and Chairman of Deacons. He was a devoted and very special father, husband, grandfather, brother, son, uncle, and friend to so many. His interests included studying the Bible, traveling and exploring God's beautiful creations, reading, gospel music, and "antiquing". He was first married to Fay Stultz. They raised their three grandchildren as their own, and after Fay's death, "Pop" to whom his grandchildren affectionately referred, remained the rock upon whom they could depend and became the father they needed. After being a widower for several years, John married Brenda Ballew Mathis in December 1996. He was predeceased by his sister, Martha Christy Johnson. John is survived by his wife, Brenda, of 18 years; his grandchildren Christopher Wilkinson (Tami) and their children Madilynn and Gavin; Heather Starr (Mark) and their son Andrew; Spencer Wilkinson and his children Sydney and Jacob; his step-children Cindy Hayes-Lee (Tim) and their children Katie Hayes and Camden Lee; Bryan Mathis, his children Victoria Wilkinson (Chase) and their daughter Lily and Bryan's son, Johnathan; his brother William Robert Whitaker (Shirley) of Griffin, GA. Nephew Robert Lynn Whitaker (Gina) and their son Will; nieces Christy Mack (David) their children, Alyssa and Jonathan; Kelly Buchanan (Jeff) their children Sarah and Samuel; Teri Shurley (Rick) and their daughter Bailey. The family would like to thank Spartanburg Regional Hospice Services staff for their compassionate care. Services will be held at 3:00 PM Thursday, March 19, 2015 at Holston Creek Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Reggie Parker. The family is at his home and will receive friends Thursday at the church from 1:30 - 2:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Holston Creek Baptist Church Building fund, 311 Holston Creek Church Road, Inman, SC 29349. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
