Joe P. Steadman

Joe P. Steadman, 73, of Inman, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2026, at Lakewood Memory Care surrounded by his family.

Born on September 3, 1952, in Inman, South Carolina, Joe was the son of the late William and Mildred Steadman. He graduated from Mars Hill College with an undergraduate degree in education and from the University of South Carolina with a master’s degree in education. After finishing school, he dedicated much of his life to education and mentorship, coaching collegiate and high school football in South Carolina, Virginia, and North Carolina and serving as vice principal at both Chapman High School and Landrum High School. His leadership and commitment left a lasting impact on countless students, families, and colleagues.

Joe held a deep and lifelong passion for sports and took immense joy in teaching young athletes (including his own children and grandchildren) the values of teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship that would later serve them throughout their lives. A man of deep personal conviction, Joe’s life was firmly rooted in his Christian faith. His beliefs guided his daily walk, shaping him into a compassionate leader, a devoted family man, and a steady source of encouragement and grace to everyone he met. Those who knew Joe will remember his steady presence, quick smile, and genuine interest in others. He had a way of encouraging people without seeking attention for himself, and his influence was felt most deeply in the lives of those he coached, taught, mentored, and loved.

Above all else, Joe loved his family. He cherished the time they spent together, possessed a great love for traveling, and was passionate about making beautiful, lasting memories with those he held dearest. He and Vicki, his wife of 51 years, together built a family rooted in faith, love, loyalty, and joy. In addition to Vicki, he is survived by his daughter Jessica Rustin (Brad), his son Patrick Steadman (Veronica), and his grandchildren, Caroline Rustin and Preston, Austin, Caleb, and Tori Steadman. He is also survived by his sister Sharon Green and his brothers Bill, Jerry, and Tim Steadman. In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his sister Carolyn Jackson.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2026, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Seawright Funeral Home in Inman, South Carolina. A celebration of Joe’s life will follow in the chapel at 11:30 a.m. with Dr. Paul Moore, retired minister of Inman First Baptist, officiating the service. After the service, interment will take place at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons Preston, Austin, and Caleb Steadman and friends John Kirkland, Eddie Price, and Brian Sherman.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to his driver Valentina Vihodet, the caregivers at Lakewood Memory Care, and the nurses from Spartanburg Regional Hospice whose compassion, kindness, and humor brought comfort during Joe’s final days.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Upstate Fellowship of Christian Athletes—an organization integral to his life since high school—at my.fca.org or Post Office Box 117, Spartanburg, South Carolina 29304.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the community he faithfully served. They take comfort in knowing that the values he instilled and the example of his life will leave an enduring legacy for all who knew him.
