FOUNTAIN INN, SC-- Mr. Jimmy Gerald Powell, 75, of 223 Wofford Shoals Road, but formerly of Duncan, SC, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 23, 2009 at his residence.
Born in Spartanburg County on June 12, 1934, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Sue (Rogers) Powell and was the husband of Ann F. Powell. He was predeceased by his first wife of 42 years, Alene (Crow) Powell.
He retired from Flor Daniels/Hoechst Celanese and was also worked as a law enforcement officer with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Department. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, and was a former member of Lyman First Baptist Church. Mr. Powell served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was the recipient of four Bronze Stars and three United Nation Service Medals.
In addition to his wife, he is also survived by two sons, Gerald E. Powell and his wife Lena of Fountain Inn, and Timothy R. Powell, also of Fountain Inn; three stepsons, Walter T. Bell of Spartanburg, SC, Keith S. Bell of Spartanburg, and David H. Bell of Startex, SC; nine grandchildren, Loretta Henson, Michelle Harris, Amanda Prince, Allen Scott, Christy Elrod, Cole Powell, Courtney Powell, Megan Powell, and Brooke Powell; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by three brothers, Charles Edward Powell, Geddis Herman Powell, and Ernest Eugene Powell.
Graveside services with Full Military Honors will be held at Fort Prince Memorial Gardens in Wellford, SC, on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at 3:00 PM with Rev. Rodney Powell officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the graveside.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Spartanburg County Humane Society 150 Dexter Road, Spartanburg, SC 29301 or Interim Hospice, 775 Spartan Boulevard, Suite 101, Spartanburg, SC 29301.
The family will be at the home of Michelle Harris, 18 Crescent Street, Lyman, SC 29365.
