James E (Jim) Burnett, Jr, 66, of Lake Bowen passed away Wednesday, March 13th, while in the company of cherished family members, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Jim was born in Spartanburg on February 8, 1947, a son of the late Edith Elizabeth Mabrey and James Elijah Burnett, Sr. He retired as the coroner of Spartanburg County, was a member of the Spartanburg Lion's Club, SC Law Enforcement Officer's Association, S.C. Coroner's Association, the Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team where he responded to numerous disasters involving multiple fatalities and where he was a DMORT Consultant for the movie Random Hearts, he was a recipient of the Officer of the Year Award while employed with Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office, and received the J.P. Strom Award from the S.C. Law Enforcement Academy for receiving the highest grade in his class, and was a member of Boiling Springs First Baptist Church.
Jim is survived by three daughters, Leigh Ann Webb and husband Jimmy of Boiling Springs, Lesley Rentz and husband Jon of Spartanburg, Kelly Burnett of Greenville, two brothers, Ric Burnett of Atlanta, Ron Burnett of Boiling Springs, a sister, Debbie Johnson of Buford, GA, five grandsons; Ethan and Eli Webb, Caleb and Creighton Rentz, and Cam Wolfenbarger. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brother, Mike Burnett.
The family is at the home of his daughter at 130 Northgate Circle, Boiling Springs and will receive friends Saturday following the service at Boiling Springs First Baptist Church.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at at Boiling Springs First Baptist at 10:00am on Saturday, March 16th, conducted by Rev. Jerry Clevenger, Sheriff Chuck Wright, Coroner Rusty Clevenger, Congressman Trey Gowdy, and Coroner Dennis Fowler. Final services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Sheriff's Office Chaplain's Fund, Spartanburg County Foundation, Contribution Lockbox, PO Box 60402 Charlotte, NC 28260-0402
