Inman, SC---Jesse "Smiley" Frank Fowler, Jr. loving husband, daddy and poppie of 251 Old Hwy. 11, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 1, 2013 after a courageous fight with cancer. Born in Inman, SC on May 3, 1946 he was the son of the late Jesse Frank Fowler, Sr and Margaret Elizabeth Day Fowler.
Jesse grew up in Gramling and on the Mill Hill in Inman on "H" Street. He was Known by all of his schoolmates as "Smiley". He graduated from Chapman High School in 1964. He was married on June 25, 1967 at New Prospect Baptist Church to the love of his life Mary Ann Story. They have been happily married for 45 years. They have two children, Tammy Fowler Starnes married to Donald M. Starnes and Tina Fowler Stewart married to Heath Stewart. Jessie and Ann have six beautiful grandchildren, the late Christian Auburn Stewart, Kody Stewart, Tawnee Starnes, DJ Starnes, Mackenzie Stewart and Logan Stewart and five siblings, Frances Hall of Startex, SC, Ralph Fowler of St. Petersburg, Fl, Dorothy Bracket of Seneca, SC, Elaine Belcher of Inman, SC and Martha Settle of Inman, SC. He has a wonderful loving family. After completing high school, Jesse joined the US Navy Seabee's and served three tours in Vietnam. When he returned home from the military he began selling Insurance. He has worked for Home Security, Jefferson Pilot and is currently employed with American National. He is a member of New Prospect Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, a choir member and served on the building and grounds committee along with the cemetery committee. He was the teacher of the Older Gentlemen's Sunday School Class for Tex Harmon, Ellis McMillan and Rev. Bob Vickery. Wednesdays was his favorite time with Ellis McMillan to go visiting with all the homebound church members. He and Ann loved camping and their family and friends. He enjoyed LIFE! He loved singing and impersonating "Elvis Presley". Many people have wonderful memories of his entertainments and performances. He is a member of the Gideon's and a former member of the New Prospect Masonic Lodge. If there is anything that Jesse would want to share, it would be "Put God First, live life and love everyone." To all the children in the community he was know as "Donald Duck".
The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 2, 2013 from 6-8 PM at Seawright Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at 3 PM at New Prospect Baptist Church with Dr. Ron Gaddy, Rev. Bill Harris, Rev. Mark Williams, Rev. Dick Keller and Danny Smith officiating.
Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Tom Harney, Bruce Melton, Frank Cyr, Jeff Ballard, DJ Starnes, Kody Stewart, Don Starnes, Heath Stewart, Furman Melton and Ray Poteat.
Honorary Escorts will be Stan Cannon, Harold Fletcher, Ronnie Atkins, Tim Atkins, Jimmy Alverson, David Alverson, Donnie Alverson, Doug Johnson, George Souther, Ed Allen, Harold Dean Burns, Johnny Clement, Warren O'Sullivan and Wofford O'Sullivan.
