James Ramsey "Smokey" Helms, Sr., 80, of 210 Old Settle Road Inman, passed away Saturday, June 21st, at his home.
James was born in Charlotte, NC on November 30, 1933, a son of the late Ethel Watts Helms and John Fletcher Helms. He successfully owned and operated three different machine shops. As a 33rd degree mason, he was a member of Masonic Lodge # 281; a shriner, having sponsored a bed for several years at the Shriner's Children's Hospital in Greenville; and was a member for 33 years of the Landrum Lion's Club. His survivors include; a son, William Anthony "Tony" Helms and wife Thelma Helms of Norman, Ok.; a daughter, Cynthia Ann Helms Birkenheiser and husband Harold "Snyder" Birkenheiser of Gilbert, S.C.; two granddaughters, Wendy Ranee Birkenheiser of Lexington, S.C. and Cynthia Denise "Dee Dee" Birkenheiser of New York; one great grandson, Eason Ramsey Barnhill of Lexington, S.C.; his friend, Lucrecia Donnahoo of Inman and several nieces and nephews in the Charlotte area. He was predeceased by a son, James Ramsey Helms, Jr. who lived in West Columbia, S.C.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills 130 Forest Glen Drive Columbus, NC 28722. The family wishes to extend their thanks and gratiutude to the hospice angels that helped and assisted Mr. Helms during his illness.
