Hugh Wayne Johnson, known to his friends as "Honeybun", departed this life, Monday, February 27, 2017 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice House following a brave and courageous battle with declining health.
A native of Inman, he was the son of the late Creed Welton "Red" Johnson and Ruby Faye Hammett Johnson, and was a member of Northbrook Baptist Church. Wayne was a graduate of Gramling High School Class of 1952 and was captain of the basketball team his senior year. He loved sports and took part in textile, American Legion, and community baseball and softball for many years.
He was a graduate of Spartanburg Community College, formerly Spartanburg Tec, receiving a degree in Business Management.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Linda Johnson, who has been constantly at his side as his care provider during his declining health.
He is survived by a son, Ronnie Wayne Johnson of Inman, a sister, Doris J. Forrester of Greer, a brother, Dr. Henry Johnson and his wife Georgia of Inman and many nieces and nephews. There are two step-children, Scott Reeves and Tonya Haulk and husband Russell, three grandchildren, Wendy Hipp, Chad A. Conway Smith and Zachery Penland. He leaves behind a loving, four legged companion cat named "Sugar".
Wayne was co-owner of the family business and operated Inman Skilled Nursing Facility, retiring as Administrator and Golden Age Nursing Home. He was a member of the Inman Masonic Lodge # 201 and served more than 50 years with Mid City Shrine Club in Lyman.
He was preceded in death by a son, Terry Randall Johnson, who always held a special place in his heart since his untimely, tragic death.
A special "Thank You" is expressed to Joni McDade and Teresa Painter, Eugene McKracken, and to the nurses and staff of SRMC Hospice House for their dedicated and compassionate care given to Wayne and his family. Thanks are also expressed to the following friends: Mike and Barbara, Tony and Jenny, Lew and Carolyn, Hazel and Gail, Don and Rita, James Tate, neighbors and our church family for their love and support.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 1, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Seawright Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 4:00 PM in the funeral chapel conducted by Rev. Benny Green and Rev. Ralph Brown. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Inman, SC.
