Helen Bearden Edwards, 91, formerly of the Holly Springs Community passed away Thursday, June 12th, 2008 at National Health Care of Greenville in Greer, S. C.
Mrs. Edwards was born in Oakway, SC in Oconee County on February 6, 1917, the daughter of the late William Walker and Mary (Hill) Bearden. She was the widow of Oscar Manning Edwards and a longtime, active member of Holly Springs Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years. She taught school in the Spartanburg County, District One Schools for 43 years, retiring in May, 1982. Mrs. Edwards was a 1936 graduate of Anderson University earning an Assoc. B. S. Degree and was crowned the May Queen. She also graduated from Winthrop University in 1938 earning a B. S. Degree. She enjoyed being a charter member of the Landrum Quilters and proposed the idea of a S. C. Quilt in the late 1980's. It was made by her and other members after several years of work and now proudly hangs in the Capital Building in Columbia, S. C.
Survivors include three sons, W. Ryon Edwards, Sr. of Spartanburg and Martha C. Edwards also of Spartanburg, T. Kenneth Edwards and his wife Jane of Greenville, S. C. , and Herb Edwards of the home in the Holly Springs Community, Lyman, S. C., grandchildren include, Jenny E. McGurk and her husband, Jeffrey W. McGurk of Holly Springs Community, Lyman, W. Ryon Edwards, Jr. and his wife Page A. Edwards of Lexington, S. C.. , K. Bruce Edwards and his wife, Carla M. Edwards, of Columbia, S. C. , Andrea E. Birch and her husband, Spencer G. Birch, of Ossing, N. Y. , Jeffrey K Edwards, of Knoxville, TN. , Matthew M. Edwards and his wife, Ami K. Edwards, of Seneca, S. C. and thirteen great grandchildren. Mrs. Edwards was predeceased by three brothers, Hill, Buck and Curt Bearden and three sisters, Flora Bearden, Dixie B. Martin and Pauline Bearden. Graveside services will be held at Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery at 2:00 P. M., today, Saturday, June 14th, with Dr. Tim Clark officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service near the graveside.
