GERALD WILLIAM COPELAND

Gerald W. Copeland passed peacefully on May 3, 2012 at his home in Inman, SC. He was born on June 13, 1920 to James J. and Pearvie Tallent Copeland in Landrum. He graduated from Landrum High School and Cecil's Business College in Spartanburg.

He worked continuously for the Bennie E. Gramling family from 1940-2007 with only one leave when he served in the US Navy for three and one-half years during World War II. He served in San Francisco and the Canal Zone and was discharged as a Chief Petty Officer in late 1945. In May of 1945, while in San Francisco, he married Joyce Evelyn Morrow of Greer.

At Gramling, Mr. Copeland served in many capacities including managing Gramling Marketing Company, overseeing the peach tree nursery activities both in SC and McMinnville, TN, collecting daily data for the Agricultural Weather Forecast for the Piedmont region, and developing new varieties of peach trees, including the O'Henry and Emerald Pearl.

Mr. Copeland loved the outdoors. He gardened and especially took joy in growing pecan trees and gathering the pecans each fall. He also made exquisite handcrafted furniture. Many items were reproductions of Colonial Williamsburg pieces made of solid mahogany.

He and Mrs. Copeland joined Holston Creek Baptist Church in the late 1940's where he has served as a deacon, a member of several search and building committees, and church clerk for many years. He was a member of the Men of Hope Sunday School Class.

Mr. Copeland was preceded in death by his first wife in 1996. He married Frances Tucker Cartee in 1998 whom he met at Holston. He is survived by Mrs. Frances Copeland, his daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Ann C. and Dale A. Heatherington of Roswell, GA, his bother Ray Copeland of Campobello, his brother and sister-in-law Dr. Edwin and Hilda Copeland of Annapolis, MD, his step-son and daughter-in-law Huey and Glenda Cartee of Cross Hill, and his step-daughter and son-in-law Tanya and Greg Edwards of Hickory, NC. Other survivors include many nieces, nephews, step- grandchildren, and step-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 1:30-2:30 pm on Saturday, May 5th at Holston Creek Baptist Church with the service to follow at 3:00 pm. Dr. Reggie Parker will officiate, and deacons will serve as pallbearers. Burial will be afterwards at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Landrum.
