George Psillas

We have lost one of the best!

George Nicholas Psillas died suddenly on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at the age of 78.  He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Judy Psillas.  He was born on January 26, 1946 to Nicholas George and Helen Kurlas Psillas of Greenville, SC.

He is survived by three children, Vicki Huffman (husband, Andy Omundson), Patrick Huffman and Nick Trainor; two sisters, Marigo Ruch of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Renee Theopholis of Wilmington, North Carolina; grandchildren, Cory Chitwood and Casey Huffman, three great grandchildren, Natalie and Sullivan Chitwood, and Riley Huffman, and several nieces and nephews.

He was a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where he especially enjoyed serving as an usher.   He loved to entertain and enjoyed hosting circle picnics and parties.

George spent nearly sixty years at McMahan Shoes in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where he took care of many people in Spartanburg County and surrounding areas.  George was recognized almost everywhere he went as “Mr. George”, the Shoe Man; from an airport in Atlanta, to a Waffle House somewhere between Spartanburg and Cincinnati, George definitely had a fan base.

George lived life to the fullest. After he and the love of his life Judy bought a house on the lake, they spent every minute (and most of their dimes) renovating and enjoying all that the lake life had to offer.  During the summer he spent as much time as possible at or near the lake. He often spent time with friends dropping by, or neighbors just coming over to hang out and laugh. He loved to garden, and he always had plenty to share with friends and family.

He and Judy danced, loved, and laughed for almost thirty-six years together.

More than anything, George loved his family.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at 11:00 am at St. John's Lutheran Church, with a private interment of his ashes in the columbarium to follow. The family will receive visitation after the service in the Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 415 S. Pine Street, Spartanburg, SC  29302.
