Brigadier General Frank Huey,76, of Fingerville, SC, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2015 at the Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills in Landrum, SC. He was born July 31, 1938 in Tasley, Virginia to the late Stanley Huey and Frances Rothermel Huey Bennett of Milford, Delaware and was married to Lee McCown Huey for fifty-two years. Al grew up in Milford, Delaware surrounded by a large, loving family. As a result of his outstanding athletic ability and his strong sense of discipline, he earned twelve letters while in high school. He was a member of the first class of the Milford High School Football Hall of Fame, and in 2014 was inducted into the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame. Al, a 1960 graduate of the University of Delaware, was the 1991 College of Education alumnus of the year. He also received an M.B.A. from Auburn University and was a graduate of the Air Command and Staff College and of the Naval War College. In June, 1960, Al accepted a commission in the Marine Corps and he was designated a Naval Aviator in February, 1962. He retained his passion for flying fighter jets throughout his distinguished Marine Corps career that included three combat tours in Viet Nam. He was commander of VMFA 333 and of Marine Aircraft Group 31. He served as Commanding General of the 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade and of Marine Corps Base, Camp S.D. Butler. He also was Assistant Wing Commander, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, and Deputy Commander, Fleet Marine Force Atlantic. His decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with combat "V" and the Purple Heart. His Marine Corps career fulfilled his childhood dreams. Al's retirement brought him many pleasurable years. He enjoyed time with his relatives and classmates in Delaware, attending military reunions, and visiting old friends around the United States and Europe. He delighted in entertaining house guests and giving them tours of the local area. Al loved speed, mechanical challenges, and teamwork and was involved in auto racing at several levels. The highlight of his retirement years was time spent with companions who shared his interests in aviation and vintage cars.
In addition to his wife and mother, Al is survived by his children, Frank and Eleanor. Also, by his brothers Gene (Hope) and Stan (Mona), half brothers Ed (Kim) and Tommy, half sisters Dorothy Reed, Edna Perrone (Tom), Sharon Palmer (Ed) and Karen Begley (Martin). Al's life was one of courage, determination, and leadership. However, his greatest legacy is the strength of his many friendships. His relationships survived time and distance and exemplified loyalty, respect, concern, and generosity. A memorial service will be held at 9:30 AM, August 11, 2015 at MCAS Beaufort Chapel and burial with full military honors will be held on August 11, 2015 at 11:00 AM in the Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, SC. Following the services, there will be a reception at the home of Mike Rainey at 801 Prince Street, Beaufort, S.C. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
