Doris Elaine Cole McMakin, 72, of Lyman, South Carolina, passed away on Saturday, October 30, 2021, after a long and courageous battle with mucosal melanoma. Doris was born in Laurens, South Carolina, on March 5, 1949, a daughter of the late Ryan Tillman Cole and Mary Tuck Cole. She is survived by her husband, John McMakin, Sr., the love of her life for fifty three years. She was a member of United Methodist Church of the Covenant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and spent most of her life caring for as many dogs as possible.
In addition to her husband, Doris is survived by her two sons and their families whom she adored, John McMakin, Jr. and his wife, Julie, of Lyman, South Carolina; Rev. Joel McMakin and his wife, Missi, of Indian Land, South Carolina; grandchildren, Jack McMakin of Clemson, South Carolina, Meri Cole McMakin of Lyman, South Carolina, and Layne, Wesley and Max McMakin of Indian Land, South Carolina, her grand dogs, Reese, Oliver and Finley and her current rescue dog, Hobbs. She was predeceased by her special guardian angel rescue dog, Sissy, in September 2020.
She is also survived by her brother and Rook partner, Benny Cole and his wife, Beverly, of Summerville, South Carolina; sister and best friend, Vicki Toney and her husband, Jimmy, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and many special nieces and a nephew. She was blessed with an abundance of dear family and friends and her sisters of the heart: Sandra, Margaret, Dottie, Jan, Carol, Linda, Ginger, Aileen, Judy, Mary, Donna and her forever pastor, the Rev. Dr. Mitch Kyllonen.
The family expresses deep gratitude to Dr. Victoria Arlauskas, Dr. John Foster and Dr. James Dale Browne and associates for their compassionate and dedicated care over the years.
A Celebration of Life service, will be held at 3:00 PM, on Sunday, November 14, 2021 at McMakin Farms, 599 Hampton Road, Lyman, South Carolina, conducted by, Rev. Heather Humphries, Rev. Dr. Mitch Kyllenen, Mrs. Jan Banner and Rev. Joel McMakin. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to United Methodist Church of the Covenant, 9020 Asheville Highway, Spartanburg, SC 29316 or Animal Allies, 820 Gossett Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
The family suggests that everyone dress casual for the service.
