David J. Morrow

Inman, SC--David J. Morrow, of Inman, S.C. affectionately known as "Dave" by his friends and family, passed away on Monday, February 1, 2010 in Spartanburg after a month long illness with cancer. He was 49.
David graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of South Carolina in 1983. He became an accomplished journalist, working for Fortune Magazine, SmartMoney Magazine, The Detroit Free Press, The New York Times and serving as Editor-in-Chief for TheStreet.com for eight years. Under his direction, TheStreet.com won five Society of American Business Editors and Writers Awards, one Loeb Award with five nominations, two New York Press Club awards, one Webby nomination, two Codie Award nominations, four Online Journalism Award nominations and four awards from the Media Industry Newsletter (min). He received Min's 2007 award for Best Editor of a Web Site and was later inducted into Min's Digital Hall of Fame. His most recent accomplishment was becoming the first Reynolds Endowed Chair in Business Journalism at the Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno. He resided in the New York Area for 21 years before relocating to Nevada.
He is survived by his mother, Emily R. Morrow, and sister, Janice E. Morrow both of Inman, another sister, Beth Hammond, and brother-in-law, Rick Hammond, and nephews Matt and Trevor Hammond of Lawrenceville, Ga and many extended family members.
Memorial services will be held at later dates in both Spartanburg, S.C. and Reno, Nevada. A scholarship fund for promising journalism students is currently being set up in honor of David and inquires concerning that can be made to Beth Hammond at bh@wlr.net.
