Carl Edward Mann, 88, died January 3, 2011 in Inman, South Carolina. Carl was born April 1, 1922 in Blue Diamond, Kentucky, the son of the late Critton Mann and Nancy Ann Vanderpool Mann.
Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Leoma Mae Cook Mann after 63 years of marriage.
He is survived by three sons and two daughters, Jack Mann of Crawford, Colorado, Linda Freyer of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Loretta Maynard of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, Willie Mann of Freeport, Texas, and Will Mann of Lake Jackson, Texas. He is also survived by two brothers, Ray Mann and Homer Mann of Cincinnati, Ohio. "Pop" left thirteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Carl served in the Marines during WW II on Guadalcanal and other islands during the New Georgia Campaign. He served with the Raiders and was awarded the Navy Cross and the Purple Heart.
He spent forty four years as a coal miner. He started in West Virginia with Boone County Coal as a "hand loader" and worked his way up to Mine Superintendent. He finished his career as General Mine Foreman for Kaiser Steel in New Mexico.
He loved the horse races, camping, hunting, and a good poker game.
Carl was of the Catholic faith and a wonderful father. He earned the respect of all who knew him.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6-8 PM at Handley funeral Home. Services will be at 11:00 AM Thursday, January 6 at Handley Funeral Home, Danville,WV. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens, Madison with military graveside rites performed by Daniel Boone VFW Post 5578 Madison, WV.
