Carl F. Settle, Jr. died on March 17, 2025 after a prolonged battle with heart disease. Born on July 19, 1941, he was 83 years old. A lifelong resident of Spartanburg County, Carl was the son of the late Carl F. Settle, Sr. and Sunie Hortense Seay Settle.
In his professional life, Carl spent over 44 years working factory swing shifts at Union Camp/International Paper, where he advanced through various machine operator roles in the production and printing of cardboard boxes and containers. He spent 14 years as a senior die cutter operator. He eventually retired from International Paper in 2006 as a senior die room operator. He was a lifelong member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Spartanburg where he had previously served as a deacon and Sunday School Director. In his personal life, Carl enjoyed spending time with family, watching Braves baseball, Carolina Gamecocks sports, and NASCAR racing. He often shared memories of watching baseball games at Spartanburg’s Duncan Park or attending early stock car races at the Spartanburg Fairgrounds as a young man.
Carl was an avid vegetable gardener who was blessed with a green thumb. He always produced a large crop of Better Boy tomatoes each summer, which he cheerfully shared with family and friends. A quintessential small-town southern man, Carl grew up on a small family farm near Inman SC. He was a graduate of Fairforest High School, where he was President of the 4-H club and showed cattle at the Piedmont Interstate Fair. He worked at a local tire shop in the summers and attended dances and concerts at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Carl is survived by his beloved wife Brenda West Settle (Spartanburg), son Michael Scott Settle (Spartanburg), daughter Melinda Settle Olds (Columbus, NC) and her husband John Robert Olds II, and a grandson Davis Austin Olds (Wofford College). He is also survived by an older sister Shirley Settle Sanders (Woodruff), a younger sister Nancy Settle Elder (Inman) and her husband Joe E. Elder, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. A third sister, Betty Joyce Settle, died very shortly after her birth in 1935.
