Bruce Shands
Lyman, SC
Bruce Shands of Ashlan Village Retirement Community in Lyman, SC, went home to be with the Lord August 8, 2015, one week short of his 86th birthday, after a brief illness. Born August 15, 1929, he was the son of the late Ellis and Marie (Bruce) Shands. Bruce loved his country and served with distinction in the U.S. Army in France and Germany. A graduate of Clemson University with a degree in Agricultural Science, he worked with the NC Department of Agriculture 37 years until his retirement in 1994. He was a faithful member of First Baptist North Spartanburg where he served the Lord as a deacon and in many other capacities. He was active in the New Beginnings Sunday School class but he desired to be best remembered as a committed follower of Jesus Christ having trusted Jesus as his Savior as a boy at Philadelphia Baptist Church in Pauline. Bruce was a loving husband and a beloved uncle to a whole passel of adoring nieces and nephews to whom he was more like a grandfather than an uncle. The love of his life was his sweetheart and wife of 63 years, Helen Phillips Shands, who survives him. In addition, he is survived by a dear sister, Ethel (Shands) Smith of Ashlan Village Retirement Center in Lyman and a brother-in-law, Frankie Phillips and his wife, Mildred, of Lyman. A memorial service with military honors will be held at First Baptist North Spartanburg at 3:00 on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 with Dr. Mike Hamlet, Rev. Al Phillips and Rev. Paul Edwards officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:30 - 3:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Faith Commitment Missions Offering of First Baptist North Spartanburg at 8740 Asheville Hwy, Spartanburg SC 29316. The family is at their respective homes. An online guest register is available at www.seawrightfunerahome.com.
