Bobby Gene Godfrey, 84, of 240 Valley High Drive, Inman, passed away Thursday, July 17th, 2014 at Regional Hospice Home. Bob was born in Union County on August 6, 1929 and was a lifelong resident of Spartanburg. He was a son of the late Mittie Ruth Eaves Godfrey and Fred Godfrey.
He was a retired electrician and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War where he slugged .417 to win the batting crown for the Bragg Baseball League and was voted MVP. He was a member of Inman Presbyterian Church and attended Anderson Mill Baptist Church. In addition, he was a mason, a member of American Legion Post #45, an avid golfer, and a member of Links O' Tryon. Survivors include his beautiful and wonderful wife, Joann Loyd Toney Godfrey, his children that blessed his heart which include his daughters, Freda G. McKinney (Frank) and Teresa G. Crawley both of Hilton Head Island, Judy Toney Gustin (Rich) of Statesville, NC; his sons, Ken Toney (Pam) of Boiling Springs, Arty Toney (Regina) of Inman; his two brothers, Jimmy Godfrey (Margaret Ann) of Anderson and Billy Godfrey of Spartanburg. His grands, of which he adored, numbered 15 grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and great great grandson. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Daniel G. Godfrey, a daughter in law, Ann Godfrey and two great grandchildren. The family is at the home and will receive friends Sunday 2:00-3:00 at Seawright Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow in Seawright Funeral Chapel at 3:00 on Sunday, July 20th with Mr. Lee Toney and family members speaking. At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice 120 Heywood Ave., Suite 300 Spartanburg, SC 29302.
