Billy Joe (Bill) Phillips, 85, of Spartanburg passed away Monday, January 31st, at White Oak Rehabilitation after a short illness. He was born June 19, 1936, in Cherokee Falls, SC to Johnnie and Virginia Hammett Phillips.
Bill is survived by his wife, Helen Horne Phillips of Spartanburg, his sons, Neal (Melinda) of Inman, Eric (Lynn) of Campobello, John (Jane) of Summerville, his sister, Sandra Dean Parton of Rutherfordton, NC, and grandchildren, Wade Phillips and Kristen (Travis) Palmer of Atlanta, GA, Davis and Samuel Phillips of Greer, William (Amanda) Phillips of Campobello, Meredith Phillips of Summerville, Crystal (Jeff) Jones of Greer, and Brody (Cara) Blackwell of Biloxi, MS, and four great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Barbara Cranford Phillips who was from Campobello, and his stepfather, Sam Dean who was from Gaffney.
Bill played football at Blacksburg High School and attended Clemson University, served in US Army in Korea, and was retired from Spartanburg Steel Products after 30 years. An ardent supporter of Clemson Football, he also enjoyed golf, dancing, and music and taught himself to play many musical instruments. His family and friends will remember him as a man who loved his family and never met a stranger. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. The family will receive friends 1:00 PM until 2:00PM on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at Seawright Funeral Home in Inman. His funeral service will follow immediately at 2:00 in Seawright Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Sean Fortner. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Inman.
The Phillips family wishes to thank the family of Helen Horne Phillips for all the love and support they showed to their father over the years. Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice. The family respectfully requests that while attending services in Bill's memory, you wear a face mask when you are unable to maintain physical distance.
