Betty Jean Mathews

October 6, 1931 — April 4, 2020

Betty Jean (Collins) Mathews passed away on Saturday April 4th 2020 at Rosecrest Nursing Home in Inman, SC. She was born in Tacoma Park, Md. on October 6th, 1931. She lived in the Maryland area until marrying Walter Robert (Bob) Mathews on December 10, 1949. After living overseas and throughout the USA with her career Air Force husband, she returned to Maryland for the next 47 years to be with family. Betty enjoyed her Duck Pin Bowling league with family and friends. She enjoyed making arts and crafts in her complete wood workshop that many wood craftsman would have envied. Betty always loved children and was ready to babysit her grandchildren and her neighbors' children whenever needed. The grandkids were all happy that Grams was a chocoholic; her cupboards were always full of Hershey kisses! She also loved to go to casinos with her sisters and mother. She could always be counted on to have a Maryland crab feast or attend a Baltimore Orioles game and eat at Phillips Crab House. We will always remember her loving, caring and generous heart. She moved to Campobello, SC in 2014 to live with her son and daughter-in-law. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Walter Robert (Bob) Mathews, son Walter Robert Mathews Jr. and daughter-in-law Jill K. Mathews, daughter Brenda Lyd Athanas and son-in-law Michael Morris Athanas, daughter Belinda Fay Banaszak son-in-law Rob Paul Banaszak and 8 grand children, 14 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. She is preceded in death by son Wayne Steven Mathews, father John Wilbur Collins, mother Lydia Fletcher Collins and 4 siblings. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System Hospice, PO Box 430, Drayton, SC 29333.
