Betty Jean Sims Garner, 89, formerly of Inman, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, in Smyrna, Georgia. She is survived by her daughter, Lynda Olle (Michael), of Smyrna, GA, and three grandchildren: Anna Cathryn Olle (Andrew Lanman) of Lexington, SC, Matthew Olle (Melody Haskell - fiancé) of Atlanta, GA, and Laura Nesbitt (Zachary) of Smyrna, GA. Additionally, she is survived by her nieces, Cindy Lathan and Jane Clary, and her nephew, Wayne Hyder. Betty also had a chosen Inman family including Sherry and Donnie Collins, Keith and Joann Painter, and Matthew and Monica Williams.

Born on July 29, 1935, in Campobello, SC, Betty was the daughter of the late Myrtle Laughter Sims and Broadus Sims. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles David Glover, as well as her sisters, Nell Cantrell and Hellon Hyder.

Betty was a member of First Baptist North Spartanburg, and had a distinguished career in the medical field, where she developed her expertise across various specialties. She was actively engaged in her Sunday School Class and regularly volunteered at the local soup kitchen. Her commitment to community service extended to her support of Operation Christmas Child. An avid gardener, she maintained a diverse array of vegetables, plants, and over 30 types of rose bushes. She also enjoyed observing the various birds that visited her feeders and bird bath, a pastime she cherished with her late sisters, Hellon and Nell.

Affectionately known as “Mema” by her grandchildren and their loved ones, Betty had a warm and welcoming presence, often greeting visitors with coffee, dessert and companionship. She particularly enjoyed baking brownies for her family and friends.

For many years, Betty volunteered with the Cardiac Rehabilitation program at Spartanburg Regional Hospital, providing support and encouragement to individuals on their recovery journey, during which she accumulated over 5,000 volunteer hours and earned the title of Volunteer of the Month. Her compassionate nature and willingness to assist others have made a lasting impact on all who knew her. Betty will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for her wit, wisdom, and unwavering spirit.
