Barbara Joann Poteat, RN, BSN, 69,of 5 Anderson St., died Thursday, November 26th, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. She was predeceased by her parents, J.D. and Lucille McKelvey Poteat and a brother, Johnny D. Poteat, Jr.
Survivors include two nieces Deborah P. Hagin and her husband Ken of Statesboro, Ga., Denise Poteat of Savannah, Ga. and a nephew Johnny D Poteat, III, and wife Lori of Greensboro, NC. , five adorable great nieces and nephews, Ashton and Blake Hagin of Statesboro, Ga. and Kelley, David and Preston Poteat of Greensboro, NC.
Joann was born August 15, 1940 and was a registered nurse for 39 years having received her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from USC in Columbia. During her 39 years of practice, she was a nurse at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, Mary Black Memorial Hospital and in the PCCU Dept. for twelve years at Laurens County Hospital before her retirement. Her love for nursing was so great that after her retirement, she returned back to work fulltime as an RN at St. Lukes Hospital in NC.
She was appointed to the Manchester Who's Who among executives and professional women in nursing and healthcare for the "Honors Edition" 2006 to 2007 registry.
A member of Inman First Baptist Church for 61 years, a Sunday School teacher in the Six to Seven Year Old Dept for 17 years and served on the events committee of the church.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, November 28th at the Seawright Funeral Chapel with Dr. Paul Moore officiating. A visitation will be held one hour before the service at the funeral home. The service will be composed of songs sung by a quartet and readings of scripture. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Inman, SC . Family will be at her home. Memorial contributions may be made to Inman First Baptist Church Building Fund, 14 N. Howard Street, Inman, SC 29349.
