Mrs. Ann Buckwalter Salter, wife of Lea Salter, passed away Thursday at the Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills in Landrum after an extended illness. She was 80.
Mrs. Salter was born May 18, 1934 in Walterboro, a daughter of the late Lawrence Emmons Buckwalter and Ida Mae Stokes Buckwalter. She attended public schools in Walterboro and graduated from Columbia College in 1955, where she was class president and later earned a Master of Education degree from USC Upstate. Ann taught fifth grade for 25 years in both Greenville and Spartanburg school districts. Ann was an elder in the Presbyterian Church in Inman, SC and her other community work included being a Sunday School teacher and spending time working for her beloved Columbia College. She became president of the Alumnae Association for Columbia College, was on the Board of Visitors and received the college's highest alumnae award. She was very active in Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary teachers group and became state president. In retirement, she also volunteered in the Guardian Ad Litem program in Spartanburg County.
Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Lea Salter; children, Susanne Cox and husband Chris of Greer and David Salter and wife Tammy of Edisto Beach. Seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at the Seawright Funeral Home Chapel in Inman with Rev. Dottie Metropol officiating. A private burial service will be held at Live Oak Cemetery in Walterboro, directed by Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to CAR Ministry, Inman Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 196, Inman, SC 29349 or to one's favorite charity.
